Dealing with high action or string buzz? You’re not alone. Most guitars are sold without a proper setup, and even the best instruments can show issues and need adjustments over time. Changes in climate, wear and tear, and improper factory adjustments can make your guitar feel off, sound dull, or become difficult and even painful to play.
Buzzing frets or poor action is frustrating and can steal the joy of playing your instrument. These issues usually get worse over time, but they don’t have to.
Bring your guitar back to life at Joyful Noise Guitar Setups and Repairs! We will ensure your guitar plays as it should, smooth, precise, and tailored to your preference. Whether you need a simple adjustment, a full setup, or a repair, we have you covered. Your guitar should feel great in your hands, and we will make that happen.

Because you want your guitar to play it’s best, we believe that regular setups will maintain an excellent quality playing experience for you all year, regardless of the harshness of the four New England seasons. Each setup is tailored to achieve low action with minimal buzzing, creating a seamless playing experience. Unless otherwise requested, we focus on precision adjustments that will cater to your playing style.
1. Initial Inspection: We thoroughly examine your guitar to identify any specific issues and assess its overall condition.
2. Truss Rod Adjustment: this adjustment will ensure that the neck has the right amount of relief (.010mm at the 9th fret for guitars, .013mm for basses). This will create a comfortable playing surface, minimizing string buzz.
3. Bridge Height Adjustment: We will fine tune the string height at the 12th fret for acoustics, and the 17th fret for electrics, optimizing playability and tone.
4. Potentiometer Maintenance: We will rotate the volume and tone pots, using DeoxIT to eliminate scratchiness and tightening loose components. We will also note recommendations for future adjustments and wear and tear on the internal components.
5. Fret Cleaning and Polishing: We will meticulously clean and polish frets with a multi-step polishing process that will enhance appearance and playability.
6. Fretboard Conditioning: We will clean and apply oil (Rosewood, Pau Ferro, and Ebony), preserving its longevity and enhancing the wood’s natural beauty.
7. String Change and Tuning: A change of strings is not needed in a full setup, but is highly recommended. When we restring your guitar, the strings will be stretched and fine tuned, and will lubricate the nut to promote smooth string movement and stable intonation in the guitar.
8. Tuning Machines Adjustment: We will tighten any loose tuning machines and torque them if necessary, ensuring they hold your tuning accurately.
9. Body Screws Maintenance: We will check and tighten any loose screws on the body, preventing unwanted vibrations and ensuring stability.
10. Pickup Height Adjustment: We assess and adjust the pickup height, ensuring your guitar’s tone and dynamic response.
11. Intonation Setup: We’ll set and adjust the intonation, guaranteeing your guitar stays in tune across the entire fretboard.
12. Final Cleaning: A thorough cleaning of the guitar to make sure it looks as good as it plays.
13. Play Test: Finally, we’ll play your guitar, checking for buzzes and maximum playability, and will evaluate the overall feel, making any final adjustments to ensure your complete satisfaction.
